When you need this conversion
Setting up a document for print in the US, Canada or anywhere Letter paper is standard. The printer tells you the finished size in inches and a resolution, usually 300 DPI. Multiply and you have the canvas size to create in Photoshop, Figma or Canva.
Common print sizes at 300 DPI
- Business card (3.5 × 2 in): 1050 × 600 px.
- Photo (4 × 6 in): 1200 × 1800 px.
- Photo (5 × 7 in): 1500 × 2100 px.
- US Letter (8.5 × 11 in): 2550 × 3300 px.
- Tabloid (11 × 17 in): 3300 × 5100 px.
Adding bleed
US printers usually ask for 0.125 in (1/8 in) of bleed on each side. Add 0.25 in to each dimension before converting: a Letter flyer with bleed is 8.75 × 11.25 in, or 2625 × 3375 px at 300 DPI.
Common mistakes
Designing at 72 DPI and “upscaling” to 300. Changing the DPI field in an export dialog doesn’t add detail. Start at the right pixel size.
Using 96 DPI for print. It’s correct for CSS inches on the web, but a Letter page at 96 DPI is only 816 × 1056 px and will print noticeably soft.
