Kilowatts to Horsepower

Kilowatts (kW) to horsepower (mechanical) (hp).

Result134.102hp

Precision (significant figures)

Formula

hp = kW × 1.34102

1 kW = 1.34102 hp

hp = kW × 1.34102. That's mechanical horsepower. So a 100 kW car engine is 134.102 hp and a 150 kW electric motor is 201.153 hp. For metric horsepower (PS), multiply by 1.35962 instead.

Formula

hp = kW × 1.34102

Worked example

  1. Start with 100 kW.
  2. Multiply by 1.34102 (hp per kW): 100 × 1.34102 = 134.102 hp.

When you need this conversion

EV and car specs listed in kW, European registration documents, generator and motor ratings, and comparing engines between markets.

Quick reference

  • 1 kW = 1.34102 hp
  • 50 kW = 67.0511 hp
  • 75 kW = 100.577 hp
  • 100 kW = 134.102 hp
  • 150 kW = 201.153 hp
  • 300 kW = 402.307 hp

Metric horsepower

European manufacturers quote PS: 100 kW is 135.962 PS. That’s why the same car can be advertised as “136 PS” in Germany and “134 hp” in the UK.

Common mistakes

Multiplying by 1.36 for US figures. That gives PS, not hp.

Reading battery kWh as motor kW. A 75 kWh battery is energy storage; the motor might be rated at 150 kW.

For the reverse, use horsepower to kilowatts.

Questions

How many hp is 1 kW?

1.34102 hp (mechanical) or 1.35962 PS (metric).

How many hp is 100 kW?

134.102 hp.

How many hp is a 150 kW EV?

201.153 hp.

Why do EV specs use kW?

Electric motors are rated in watts, and EU registration documents list engine power in kW for all cars.
