Millimeters to Points

Millimeters (mm) to points (pt).

Result11.3386pt

Precision (significant figures)

Formula

pt = mm × 2.83465

1 mm = 2.83465 pt

points = millimeters × 2.83465, because one point is exactly 1/72 inch and an inch is 25.4 mm. So 3 mm is 8.50394 pt, 4 mm is 11.3386 pt and 25.4 mm is exactly 72 pt. Both units are physical, so no DPI is needed.

Formula

pt = mm × 2.83465

Worked example

  1. Start with 4 mm.
  2. Multiply by 2.83465 (pt per mm): 4 × 2.83465 = 11.3386 pt.

When you need this conversion

The spec is metric, the software is typographic. Packaging, signage and labels are usually specified in millimeters, while stroke weights, font sizes and leading in InDesign and Illustrator are set in points. Convert once and type in the exact value.

Common values

  • 0.1 mm = 0.283465 pt (hairline)
  • 0.25 mm = 0.708661 pt (thin rule)
  • 0.5 mm = 1.41732 pt
  • 1 mm = 2.83465 pt
  • 2.5 mm = 7.08661 pt
  • 4 mm = 11.3386 pt

Leading and grids

Metric baseline grids are common in European editorial design. A 4 mm grid is 11.3386 pt, so body text set “10 on 11.34” aligns perfectly to it. Typing the exact point value avoids the drift you get from rounding to 11 pt over a long column.

Common mistakes

Assuming mm of text height equals mm of font size. Font size measures the em square, not the letters. See points to millimeters for how the two relate.

Rounding stroke weights heavily. 0.25 mm rounded to 0.5 pt is really 0.176 mm, about 30% thinner than specified.

Questions

How many points is 1 mm?

2.83465 pt (72 ÷ 25.4).

What font size gives 3 mm tall text?

A 3 mm em square is 8.5 pt. Because capital letters are only about 70% of the em, text with 3 mm tall capitals needs roughly 12 pt, depending on the typeface.

How do I set a 0.25 mm line in points?

0.708661 pt. Most software rounds to 0.71 pt, which is fine.

Why do InDesign and Illustrator use points for strokes?

Points are the traditional unit for type and rules, and the software keeps them for consistency. You can switch rulers to millimeters, but stroke weights usually stay in points.
