When you need this conversion
Checking whether your internet plan matches what downloads show, sizing uploads, streaming and backups, and comparing Wi-Fi or Ethernet speeds with disk speeds.
Quick reference
- 10 Mbps = 1.25 MB/s
- 25 Mbps = 3.125 MB/s
- 50 Mbps = 6.25 MB/s
- 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s
- 300 Mbps = 37.5 MB/s
- 1,000 Mbps = 125 MB/s
Real-world speed
TCP/IP and Wi-Fi overhead usually costs 5–10%, so a 100 Mbps plan typically shows 11–12 MB/s at best. Some apps show MiB/s (mebibytes), which is another 4.9% lower: 12.5 MB/s is 11.92 MiB/s.
Common mistakes
Reading Mbps as MB/s. The difference is a factor of 8.
Blaming the ISP for bytes vs bits. A download showing 11.8 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan is working as sold.
For how long a file takes, use the download time calculator. For the reverse, use MB/s to Mbps.
