MB/s to Mbps

Megabytes per second (MB/s) to megabits per second (Mbps).

Result200Mbps

Precision (significant figures)

Formula

Mbps = MB/s × 8

1 MB/s = 8 Mbps

Mbps = MB/s × 8. A megabyte is 8 megabits, so a download running at 10 MB/s is using 80 Mbps and a USB drive copying at 125 MB/s would fill a gigabit link. Use it to compare disk, file-transfer and network speeds.

Formula

Mbps = MB/s × 8

Worked example

  1. Start with 25 MB/s.
  2. Multiply by 8 (Mbps per MB/s): 25 × 8 = 200 Mbps.

When you need this conversion

Checking what plan you’d need for a given download rate, comparing storage speeds with network links, and planning backups or NAS transfers.

Quick reference

  • 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps
  • 10 MB/s = 80 Mbps
  • 50 MB/s = 400 Mbps
  • 100 MB/s = 800 Mbps
  • 125 MB/s = 1,000 Mbps

Bottlenecks

A hard drive reading at 150 MB/s (1,200 Mbps) is faster than gigabit Ethernet, so copies over a gigabit network top out at about 110–118 MB/s. SSDs at 500 MB/s need 5 Gbps or faster links to run at full speed.

Common mistakes

Forgetting overhead. Real throughput is 5–10% below the link rate.

MiB/s vs MB/s. Operating systems sometimes show MiB/s. Multiply MiB/s by 8.389 for Mbps.

For the reverse, use Mbps to MB/s.

Questions

How many Mbps is 1 MB/s?

8 Mbps.

How many Mbps is 10 MB/s?

80 Mbps.

How many Mbps is 125 MB/s?

1,000 Mbps, which is 1 Gbps.

What internet speed do I need for 50 MB/s downloads?

At least 400 Mbps, plus about 10% for overhead.
