US recipes, food labels, postage rates, and product weights for anyone using a metric scale. Knowing that a stick of butter is 4 oz (113 g) or a pint of blueberries is about 12 oz (340 g) makes US recipes much easier.
Quick reference
- 1 oz = 28.3495 g
- 2 oz = 56.699 g
- 4 oz = 113.398 g
- 8 oz = 226.796 g
- 12 oz = 340.194 g
- 16 oz = 453.592 g
Packaging
US products are often labeled in both: a 16 oz jar is 454 g and a 12 oz can is 340 g. Metric-first labels round the other way, so a 500 g bag is 17.6 oz.
Common mistakes
Measuring liquid ounces by weight. “8 oz milk” in a US recipe usually means 8 fluid ounces (one cup, 236.6 mL), which weighs about 244 g.
Using 30 g per ounce. It’s 6% high: fine for a rough idea, not for baking.
For the reverse, use grams to ounces.
