When you need this conversion

Room and ceiling heights, building plans, boat and RV lengths, and altitudes (aircraft altitude is still given in feet almost everywhere). Floor plans from the US and UK often need metric equivalents for Europe or Asia, and the other way round.

Common mistakes

Using 0.3 as a shortcut. It’s 1.6% short. On a 100 ft run, that’s about 48 cm too little.

Converting area as length. Square feet convert with a different factor: 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m². See square feet to square meters.
